Marketing attribution assigns conversion credit to channels, campaigns, and customer interactions. It turns a path such as paid social, email, branded search, and purchase into a report that marketing teams can use.

The report is only as good as its conversion data, identity rules, attribution window, and credit model.

## The parts of an attribution system

A working attribution setup needs:

- A defined conversion, such as a paid order or qualified lead
- Campaign metadata and touchpoint events
- Rules for connecting sessions or known customers
- An attribution window
- A model that assigns credit
- A source of truth for total conversions and revenue

Start with the conversion. If Meta, GA4, the warehouse, and finance each use a different order definition, changing the attribution model will not reconcile the totals.

## Single-touch attribution

First-touch attribution gives all credit to the first recorded interaction. It is useful for asking which channels introduce customers.

Last-touch attribution gives all credit to the final interaction before conversion. It is easy to operate, but it tends to reward demand capture. Branded search and direct visits can receive credit for demand created elsewhere.

Last non-direct attribution ignores direct traffic when a prior known source exists. This keeps a return visit from erasing the earlier campaign, but still gives one interaction all the credit.

## Multi-touch attribution

[Multi-touch attribution](https://usehardal.com/blog/multi-touch-attribution) spreads credit across several interactions. Linear, time-decay, position-based, and data-driven models make different judgments about the same path.

Run more than one model. If a budget decision reverses when the model changes, the data does not support a confident answer yet.

## Attribution windows

The attribution window decides how far back the system looks. A seven-day window may fit an impulse purchase and miss a considered B2B sale. A 90-day window may include interactions that had little influence on a fast retail purchase.

Use the observed time-to-conversion distribution as a starting point. Apply the same window when comparing channels, unless a documented business reason requires a difference.

## Attribution is not causation

An interaction can precede a conversion without causing it. Retargeting often reaches people who were already close to buying. Branded search captures existing demand. Affiliate links can appear at the end of a journey that other channels created.

[Incrementality testing](https://usehardal.com/blog/incrementality-testing) estimates causal lift with treatment and control groups. [Marketing mix modeling](https://usehardal.com/blog/marketing-mix-modeling) estimates contribution across aggregated channel and business data. Use attribution for recurring path reporting, then use tests and MMM to challenge its assumptions.

## Fix the measurement input first

Attribution cannot credit a conversion that never arrives. Browser restrictions, ad blockers, broken cross-domain tracking, and duplicate client and server events change the paths and totals before a model sees them.

Hardal's [marketing measurement product](https://usehardal.com/product) collects first-party events across web, mobile, and server sources, deduplicates delivery, and sends governed data to reporting and advertising destinations.

[arabam.com captured 80.1% more PageView data, 22.8% more purchases, and 23.8% more offer events](https://usehardal.com/customers/arabamcom) after implementing server-side conversion tracking across six services. Those recovered outcomes improve the measurement base. The attribution model still needs to state how it assigns credit.

Use the [attribution modeling guide](https://usehardal.com/glossary/attribution) to compare model rules, then document the model, window, eligible touchpoints, and excluded traffic beside every report.
