The label "server-side tracking tool" covers several different jobs. Stape hosts a Google Tag Manager server container. Segment routes events to other tools. Matomo reports on events. Hardal combines collection, delivery, analytics, and attribution.

This guide compares ten products across the fields that change an implementation: where an event starts, who runs the infrastructure, how much setup it needs, what reporting it includes, where the data lives, and what the first paid step costs.

*Disclosure: Hardal publishes this guide and appears first. Treat that placement as a vendor's judgment. The rest of the list follows by deployment type, without a composite score. [Emircan Üye](https://www.linkedin.com/in/uyemircan/), Product Manager, reviewed official product documentation and pricing on September 3, 2026. [Berkay Demirbaş](https://usehardal.com/open), co-founder and CTO, reviewed the technical distinctions. We did not install every product for this update.*

## What Server-Side Tracking Means

A server-side tracking system receives event data at a server endpoint before it sends that data to an analytics product, ad platform, warehouse, or CRM. The event can still begin in a browser or mobile app.

In a standard [Google Tag Manager Server-Side setup](https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/tag-manager/server-side/intro), a web tag sends one request from the visitor's device to a first-party server container. The container validates and transforms the event, then sends selected fields to each destination. A backend event, such as an order webhook or CRM status change, originates on your server and never enters the browser.

A first-party endpoint can reduce exposure to browser blocking. It does not guarantee delivery. Consent state, content filters, DNS configuration, tag logic, and destination API errors can still remove or reject an event.

### Three Jobs Inside This Category

1. **Collection and delivery:** Hosted sGTM and conversion API products receive events, transform them, and send them to vendors. Stape and Google sGTM sit here.
2. **Routing and governance:** Event pipelines enforce a schema, control destinations, and feed warehouses or business tools. Segment, RudderStack, Snowplow, and Tealium focus here.
3. **Reporting and attribution:** Analytics products store events and turn them into reports. Hardal, Matomo, and Piwik PRO include reporting, while Audiense Online adds ecommerce monitoring and passes conversion signals to downstream tools.

Products overlap these jobs. Decide which output you need before comparing feature counts.

## How We Compared the Tools

This is a desk review of official vendor documentation, pricing pages, developer docs, and license terms. All links and prices were checked on September 3, 2026.

The comparison uses six fields:

- **Collection model:** Browser to first-party endpoint, mobile SDK, backend API, webhook, or a mix.
- **Setup effort:** Low means an app or guided managed setup. Moderate means tags, SDKs, DNS, or an event schema. High means cloud infrastructure, data modeling, or ongoing engineering ownership.
- **Reporting and attribution:** Native business reports, pipeline inspection, enterprise add-on, or a downstream requirement.
- **Data control:** Managed cloud, customer cloud, self-hosted software, or an enterprise deployment option.
- **Pricing:** The lowest published production step. Quote-based products are marked as such.
- **Best fit:** The team and job the product serves most directly.

The shortlist covers distinct architectures instead of every vendor in each niche. [Addingwell](https://www.addingwell.com/), [TAGGRS](https://taggrs.io/), and [JENTIS](https://www.jentis.com/) deserve a separate look if managed server-side tagging is your whole shortlist. [Tracklution](https://www.tracklution.com/) focuses on guided, no-code conversion delivery. [Analyzify](https://analyzify.com/) and [Littledata](https://www.littledata.io/) are additional Shopify-focused options.

## 1. Hardal

Hardal receives first-party events from websites, mobile apps, and backend systems. It stores flexible JSON payloads, supports unlimited event parameters, and includes campaign, funnel, ecommerce, and attribution reports. Teams can inspect an item-level event and connect it to its session and campaign instead of maintaining a separate reporting product.

The Basic plan costs [$249 per month for up to 5 million events](https://usehardal.com/pricing), or $208 per month billed annually. Analytics and unlimited marketing destinations are included. sGTM and conversion API gateways are priced according to the tier and implementation, so the base plan should not be read as an all-inclusive gateway quote. Self-hosting is an Enterprise option.

[Hardal's analytics page](https://usehardal.com/analytics) documents web and mobile collection, raw data access, flexible JSON events, and marketing attribution. Hardal fits marketing and data teams that want collection and reporting in one product. A small site that only needs pageviews can spend much less with Matomo Community or a basic hosted sGTM plan.

Hardal-published customer studies report a [200% increase in tracked Fiat application submissions](https://usehardal.com/success-stories/fiat/meta-capi-lead-tracking), an [80.1% increase in tracked pageviews at Arabam.com](https://usehardal.com/success-stories/arabamcom/multi-service-conversion-tracking), and [110% more tracked purchases at Madame Coco](https://usehardal.com/success-stories/madamecoco/meta-capi-purchase-tracking). These are vendor case studies, not controlled experiments.

## 2. Stape

Stape runs a Google Tag Manager server container on managed infrastructure. Its setup wizard, custom domain support, logs, monitoring, and template ecosystem remove much of the hosting work from sGTM. Stape Analytics shows changes in data quality, while GA4, Meta, or another destination provides the business report.

The [current sGTM plans](https://stape.io/price) start free at 10,000 requests per month. Pro is $17 per month when billed as $200 yearly for up to 500,000 requests. Business is $83 per month for 5 million requests, and Enterprise is $167 per month for 20 million. One incoming request counts once even when it fires several destination tags.

The Custom Loader changes common script paths and makes collection more resistant to blockers. It does not make a browser request impossible to block. Choose Stape when your team already uses GTM and wants somebody else to run the container. See [Hardal vs Stape](https://usehardal.com/compare/stape) for a narrower product comparison.

## 3. Google Tag Manager Server-Side

Google sGTM is the control layer behind many managed hosting products. You deploy a server container in Google Cloud or another supported environment, configure clients to receive requests, and use tags, triggers, and variables to control onward delivery.

[Google's setup documentation](https://developers.google.com/tag-platform/tag-manager/server-side/intro) shows both device-originated and backend-originated requests. A common web setup still uses `gtag.js` or a web container in the browser, pointed at the server container URL. The server container controls processing and vendor delivery after that first request.

The software costs $0. Cloud Run, logs, networking, scaling, security, and engineering determine the total cost. Google publishes a testing configuration and a production configuration, so a useful budget must use your own request volume and cloud region. sGTM has debugging tools, while marketing analytics and attribution stay downstream.

## 4. Twilio Segment

Segment Connections collects events from web, mobile, server, cloud apps, and warehouses, then sends governed data across a large integration catalog. It is a customer data pipeline first. Reporting normally happens in a connected analytics, warehouse, or business intelligence tool.

Twilio advertises [700+ integrations overall](https://www.twilio.com/en-us/products/connections). Its Connections FAQ separately describes more than 450 prebuilt integrations across storage, business intelligence, and marketing categories. Those figures cover more than destinations alone.

[Connections pricing](https://www.twilio.com/en-us/products/connections/pricing) includes a free plan for 1,000 monthly visitors and two sources. Team starts at $120 per month for 10,000 visitors and has a 14-day trial. Business and the full CDP use custom pricing. Segment fits teams that need one governed event contract feeding many products. It adds cost without replacing the downstream analytics layer.

## 5. RudderStack

RudderStack also collects and routes customer events, with a warehouse-first design and 200+ cloud destinations. Its 16+ SDK sources, transformations, warehouse delivery, and Reverse ETL cover the core event-pipeline job.

The [free cloud plan](https://www.rudderstack.com/pricing/) includes 250,000 events per month. Growth costs $265 per month for 1 million events and includes a 30-day trial. Attribution is available through Enterprise Profiles & Data Apps. Free and Growth do not include it.

Self-hosted RudderStack is available under Elastic License 2.0. That is a source-available license with use restrictions, rather than an OSI-approved open-source license. The option suits engineering teams that want control of the data plane and accept ownership of deployment, upgrades, and incident response.

## 6. Snowplow

Snowplow collects behavioral data through 35+ first-party trackers and webhooks. Self-describing schemas, validation, and in-stream enrichments give data teams tight control over event structure before the data reaches a warehouse or model.

The managed platform now includes data modeling and digital analytics alongside the pipeline. Snowplow offers a [14-day product trial](https://snowplow.io/pricing), while production pricing is quote-based. Snowplow markets its commercial self-hosted production option to previous open-source users.

Snowplow's current pipeline code is source-available under [SLULA 1.1](https://github.com/snowplow/documentation/blob/main/docs/licensing/limited-use-license-faq/index.md). The license permits non-production use and specified non-commercial uses. Production use of current releases requires a commercial license. Snowplow fits a data team that values strict schemas and warehouse control enough to own a larger implementation.

## 7. Matomo

Matomo is a web analytics product with a free self-hosted Community edition and a managed cloud option. Its reports cover campaigns, ecommerce, goals, events, content, and real-time activity. Paid bundles add features such as multi-channel attribution, funnels, heatmaps, and session recording.

Matomo often collects through browser JavaScript, but its [HTTP Tracking API](https://developer.matomo.org/api-reference/tracking-api) accepts events from applications and backend systems. A fully server-originated implementation requires you to send the required visit, campaign, and user context yourself.

[Community self-hosting is free](https://matomo.org/pricing/) for unlimited users and hits, excluding your infrastructure and maintenance. Cloud pricing scales by hits. Matomo fits teams that want traditional analytics and database ownership. It is less direct for teams that mainly need managed conversion APIs feeding ad platforms.

## 8. Piwik PRO

Piwik PRO bundles Analytics, Tag Manager, Data Activation, and a consent management platform. Its Business plan uses an EU-operated cloud in Sweden. Enterprise adds broader hosting choices, including private cloud, plus a customizable business associate agreement for teams that need HIPAA support.

Piwik PRO covers web and mobile through its web tracker and [Android, iOS, Flutter, and React Native SDKs](https://developers.piwik.pro/).

[Business starts at €36 per month](https://piwik.pro/pricing/) for up to 2 million monthly actions across 20 domains and includes 25 months of retention. Enterprise starts at €366 per month billed annually. Choose Piwik PRO when procurement, consent, hosting region, and analytics need to sit under one contract.

## 9. Audiense Online, Formerly Elevar

Audiense Online is the current home of Elevar's ecommerce conversion tracking product. [Audiense's company timeline](https://www.audiense.com/about/) places the unification of Audiense, Buxton, and Elevar under the Audiense brand in 2026.

Core and Advanced plans serve Shopify and Shopify Plus through an app and a prebuilt ecommerce data layer. Premium and Elite add API access for other commerce platforms, including WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and custom systems. The product page lists [50+ marketing and analytics channels](https://www.audiense.com/products/audiense-online/), conversion monitoring, and session attribution signals.

[Core costs $225 per month](https://www.audiense.com/products/audiense-online/pricing/) for up to 2,000 orders and two destinations. Advanced costs $650 for 10,000 orders and four destinations. Premium costs $1,250 and opens the ecommerce API for stores outside Shopify. Shopify gets the shortest implementation path.

## 10. Tealium EventStream

Tealium EventStream collects and transforms server-side data, validates event specifications, enriches attributes, and sends event feeds through connectors. It accepts web, mobile, custom application, and offline sources.

The [EventStream documentation](https://docs.tealium.com/server-side/getting-started/eventstream-api-hub/introduction/) says the product keeps streaming data in memory until delivery rather than saving it to disk. Live Events helps teams inspect traffic and data quality. Persistent profiles, audiences, and wider analytics require other Tealium modules or downstream tools.

Tealium does not publish a self-serve price. It fits large teams that already need formal data contracts, consent controls, many connectors, and enterprise support. Smaller teams buying only server-side conversion delivery will usually carry more product and implementation than they need.
